Companies & communication: what’s the situation?

Communication always comes with a certain amount of uncertainty. You may know the feeling best from communicating with other people:

  • What if I’m not understood and people laugh at me?
  • What if I talk nonsense and then get sued?
  • What if I can’t find the words?

That happens in our private lives and at work. It’s why I’ve been exploring communication for decades. That uneasy feeling, that knot in your stomach when you think you’ve said the wrong thing. Or said too much. Or too little. When cameras are pointed at you—or ‘just’ a roomful of expectant faces.

At zflys, we help companies and people with dialogue inside and out. Because up here on Mount Olympus, we firmly believe that communication is the key—digital and analogue.

Whether in business or among friends, your communication shapes far more than you may think. Communication is often treated as a soft skill you either have or you don’t. But you’re here on Mount Olympus of communication, where we know it can save money, time and nerves. Everywhere.

I’d even go so far as to say communication can be fun. If you take the time for it.

You cannot not communicate. (Paul Watzlawick)

So let’s learn how. Deliberately.

Starting point: communication & chaos

Here’s what you should remember right away: communication is chaos. We can only ever control it ourselves up to a point. Words, numbers, facial expressions, technology—they all shape our daily lives. And since you’re here with us, you’ve clearly noticed that too! Clever little bear.

That’s also why we at zflys build a temple for your communication: whatever the situation, you’ll have pillars, messages and mantras to hold on to. In a world where everything has to be faster, higher and further, having a stable foundation is a relief. And since we can’t simply wish away the world’s uncertainty, we equip ourselves with authentic communication. So we grow stronger. And so the assholes on this planet don’t get to us quite so much. To make sure that doesn’t happen to us either, our communication consultancy zflys has its own temple. In the worst and best moments, it reminds us that our own communication is the one thing we truly have. When words try to knock me off course, sentences hurt like hell and actions leave me wondering, I know one thing for certain: I communicate, therefore I am.

Communication. A word everyone uses, but hardly anyone truly understands. Communication is not a simple one-way chat, not the mindless sending and receiving of messages. No, communication is a living, vibrant system that connects us, drives us and sometimes makes us despair. Because it’s chaotic, because it involves other people, because communication can drain your energy. Though I want to underline just how much energy it can give you, too. A heart-to-heart with a friend or a successful keynote on stage—and suddenly you feel like Asterix after a swig of magic potion.

But before that happens, communication often starts with a ‘WTF?!’ before it turns into an ‘AHA—I get it!’

That’s completely normal.

What is communication?!

A word everyone uses, but hardly anyone truly understands. That’s exactly what we at zflys asked ourselves—and the answer is anything but boring. After all, plenty of philosophers, scientists and writers have tried to lock communication inside a precise definition. So far, no one has managed it.

That’s another fascinating thing about communication: it genuinely makes more sense to think in terms of connection rather than separation. After all, our words, sentences and conversations are meant to connect us. And all of it happens amid the chaos of everyday working life.

The fact that ‘communication’ has never really been pinned down gives us room. Room to experiment, have fun and change the world. To put the tools you need into your hands, let me introduce your two most important conversation partners:

Conversations with yourself—intrapersonal communication

This describes the inner dialogue we have with ourselves. It is a process in which we reflect on our thoughts and feelings, make decisions and guide our behaviour. Charles Fernyhough emphasises that self-talk is a natural and necessary human ability that helps us think about ourselves and solve problems.

Conversations with others—interpersonal communication

This refers to the exchange of information between two or more people. It covers every form of communication involving a sender and a receiver, and highlights the importance of both content and relationship. Friedemann Schulz von Thun and Paul Watzlawick stress that communication does more than transmit information: it also influences the relationship between the people communicating.

Inner dialogue: intrapersonal communication

This is the conversation you have with yourself. Yes, exactly—you’re constantly talking to yourself, and that’s a good thing! This inner dialogue helps you make decisions, motivate yourself and reflect on who you are.

Typical business examples:

  • You assess your own performance and consider how you can improve.
  • You weigh up different options before making a decision.
  • You motivate yourself, even when the day gets tough.

Out-loud dialogue: interpersonal communication

This is what you usually think of as communication: conversations, meetings, negotiations, presentations. It’s not just about the content, but also about the relationship—where you stand with one another, how well you understand each other, or don’t.

Typical business examples:

  • Team meetings where ideas are exchanged.
  • Sales conversations where you win over customers.
  • Negotiations where both sides want to win.

Why does this matter?

If your inner dialogue is toxic or chaotic, your external communication will suffer. You can’t communicate clearly if you aren’t clear yourself.

Without good interpersonal communication, every team, every deal and every relationship falls apart. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it and how the other person understands it.

Communication is everywhere

Did you know that absolutely everything communicates? Yes, really—EVERYTHING. Your body language, your silence, your gaze, even the way you drink your coffee sends messages. Communication is not just what you say, but also what you don’t say.

Inner dialogue is important—in business and in our personal lives. Communication consulting can help with precisely these kinds of dialogues.

Why communication matters:

  • You cannot not communicate. Whether you want to or not, you’re constantly sending signals.
  • Communication is more than words. Facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice—all of it affects how your message lands.
  • Understanding is not a one-way street. Communication is a loop, a living cycle of sending, listening, understanding and responding.

If you don’t take this to heart, you’ll keep running into communication barriers—in your team, with customers or even with yourself.

So that’s communication...

To sum up: intrapersonal communication focuses on a person’s internal dialogue and self-reflection, while interpersonal communication involves exchanging information and ideas between people in a business context. Both forms of communication are essential for personal development, decision-making, teamwork and achieving business goals. Essential—and uncertain. But with support from zflys, you’ll soon worship communication just as much as we do. In Communication We Trust!
