Can every cat communicate with buttons?

Yes—if the cat is interested and does not have severe physical or cognitive limitations. Not every cat wants or needs it, but blind, older, young and disabled cats have all communicated successfully with buttons. So it is possible for many cats, provided the curiosity and motivation are there.

How can mindful communication improve everyday life with my pet or my team?

Mindful communication creates understanding and trust, whether with a cat or with colleagues. It helps us recognise needs clearly, avoid misunderstandings and build genuine connections. Everyday life becomes calmer, more productive and simply nicer.

What can Ghosti’s button training teach me about my own communication?

A surprising amount. Clear, simple messages land better than detours, genuine listening beats rapid reactions, and trust only develops when the other party realises their “voice" truly matters. That applies to cats just as much as it does to teams, clients and friendships.

Why does communication fail so often even when both sides mean well?

Usually not because goodwill is missing, but because space is: we don’t truly listen, rely on assumptions instead of questions, or expect understanding without being clear ourselves. Ghosti has shown me that communication is a practice, not a talent. Anyone willing to respect the other party’s mind and keep at it will make progress—whether the conversation involves four paws or an office.

Talking Animals

Sometimes the smallest voices teach us the biggest lessons in communication. My cat Ghosti learned to talk with buttons—and shows how mindful communication opens up whole new worlds.

From Adoption to Dialogue

In March 2024, I adopted my cat Ghost from Heroes for Cyprus Cats. He was almost a year old, curious and extremely chatty.

From the start, I wanted to see whether he fancied becoming an “adventure cat”: supervised trips outdoors, walks in a harness and on a lead, road trips and travel anywhere that was safe for him.

Training immediately became part of our everyday life. Then I stumbled across a YouTube video of cats communicating with buttons. Ghosti was already a champion chatterbox, constantly meowing his opinions at me. So I thought: why not give it a go?

Press Me: Ghosti’s First Words

We started button training in January 2025. Sure, there were breaks: health, travel, life doing its thing. But by now we have a board with around 30 buttons in daily use.

Ghosti got the hang of it quickly, and the results are as fascinating as they are hilarious. A few highlights:

“Bye bye”: his polite hint to guests that the party is over.

“Find it”: the treat-hunting game that turns him into a tiny detective.

“Bed”: bedtime is sacred. Full stop.

“Mom work all done”: when I’ve been glued to my laptop for too long again and he demands my attention.

And then there are the moments that hit you right in the heart: when I introduced the “Mom” button and left for an appointment, he pressed it. (An app sends me notifications whenever he presses a button.)

Turn around and drive straight home? I certainly wanted to.

Naturally, there’s also the 4 a.m. communication: “Outside,” because he wants to go onto the balcony, or “Dog,” because he misses his canine friend.

But that is exactly what shows how lively and real our shared language has become.

What Is AIC Training?

Alongside Ghosti’s communication adventure, I’m training to become an AIC trainer. AIC stands for Animal Interactivity Communication: a smart, scientifically grounded approach that helps animals talk to us humans using tools such as buttons.

What do I love about it? It isn’t a toy; it is based on real research: animals can form associations, combine concepts and initiate communication themselves when given the right tools.

This scientific foundation confirms what we pet owners have known for ages: communication knows no boundaries. It connects, enriches and adds more colour to life.

Ghosti’s Rules for Better Communication

One sentence from the AIC course has really stayed with me:

“Communication is the key to every relationship, human and non-human alike. To explore shared learning with a dog, cat or person, you must respect the mind of the other party involved in the process.”

This attitude applies just as much to my work in communication consulting as it does to my time with Ghosti. Here are some of the biggest lessons I’ve taken from our button training:

Patience and presence: Communication doesn’t happen (only) at the press of a button. It takes time, genuine listening and attention. The same goes for marketing and consulting: only those who truly notice what is being said can gain genuine insights.
Clarity is powerful: Every button stands for one simple, clear word. No jargon, no detours, just pure intent. Brands and people alike benefit from messages that leave no room for confusion.
Feedback loops are worth their weight in gold: Sometimes Ghosti presses the “wrong” button, or I misunderstand him. But that is precisely what learning is all about. The same is true in communication strategy: the audience surprises us, and we adapt.
Trust creates connection: Ghosti has learned that his voice matters. That trust keeps him motivated to communicate. The same principle applies to every successful relationship—between people, companies or communities.

New Words, New Worlds

I can’t wait to expand Ghosti’s vocabulary with “Love you,” “Mad” or “Ouch” and see where this shared journey takes us next.

Ghosti may be just a little cat from Cyprus with a huge personality, but he has taught me more about communication than I ever expected.

Whether through buttons, social media or face-to-face conversation, the heart of communication always stays the same: respect, clarity, patience and connection.

And if my cat can learn to tell me when it’s bedtime, surely we humans can learn to listen to one another just a tiny bit better.
